Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is being replaced by Sen Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), according to President Trump.
The Department of Homeland Security Secretary has been the most prominent face of Trump’s mass deportation agenda.
Role Shifting
The President said she is “moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday is Doral, Florida.”
Mullin will take over his new position on March 31. Referred to by Trump as “A MAGA Warrior who truly gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda.”
The President asserts: “Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, end the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.”
Noem Impeachment Support
As of March 5, approximately 190 co-sponsors expressed support for impeaching Noem after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis during ICE Operation Metro Surge.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) posted on social media asking the President to “immediately fire” the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, saying she is “betraying DHS’s core mission.”
Republican Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) demanded her resignation in January.
During a Senate Judiciary Oversight hearing on March 3, Tillis called Noem’s tenure “a disaster” and threatened to block all of the president’s nominations until she answered his questions.
Distrust for Noem does not only stem from ICE efforts. She bottlenecked disaster relief from FEMA during Hurricane Helene because she required expenses over $100,000 to be approved by her directly, cycled through three acting FEMA administrations and presided over massive cuts to the agency’s workforce.
Additionally, she spent $300 million in border security funds on a luxury jet fleet and $220 million more on ads that featured herself.
