Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026. He was 54 years old.
His family posted on his Facebook page that he died in his sleep.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
Brendon Screen Credits
In 1998, Brendon was nominated for a Saturn Award, Best Genre TV Actor in 1999, and in 2000, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, all during his tenure with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
The actor appeared in several episodes of “Criminal Minds” as Kevin Lynch, the FBI technical analyst and love interest of Penelope Garcia, who was played by Kirsten Vangsness.
Brendon was in the 2000 movie “Psycho Beach Party” and the 2013 film “Coherence,” with his identical twin brother Kelly Donovan.
Life After ‘Buffy’
After the “Buffy” series ended, Brendon struggled with health issues, substance abuse, and high-profile arrests. He checked himself into a rehab facility due to an alcohol problem, but his issues continued in 2010, when he returned to rehab.
In October 2014, he was arrested in Boise, Idaho, after witnesses called authorities to report a disturbance involving hotel staff. Four months later, Brandon was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after causing extensive damage to a hotel room.
In August 2015, the “Buffy” actor was scheduled to appear on “The Dr. Phil Show” to discuss his arrests and alcoholism. But during the interview, he removed his microphone and walked off the show. Later, he explained on Facebook that he had been drinking before the interview and did not feel prepared to “lay (out) the darkest parts of myself on national TV.”
His family said, “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art.”
They say the actor was passionate, sensitive, and an “endlessly driven” man who enjoyed sharing his talent and artistic creations with his family.
“Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis, and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” the statement read.
